About the Show Get ready for your favorite “oldies, but goodies” with the longest-running Broadway musical revue that won a Grammy and Seven Tony-Award nominations --- Smokey Joe’s Café. Legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songwriting duo, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, as much as anyone else, were powerhouses behind the birth of rock n’ roll. On the menu in Smokey Joe’s Café are thirty-seven of the greatest hits from the 50’s and 60’s. Showcased are musical numbers made famous by the Drifters, Dion, the Coasters, Ben E. King, Elvis Presley, Peggy Lee, and Big Mama Thornton. Vibrant and sweetly nostalgic, there is something for everyone in this show: rollicking, raucous, frivolous, and serious songs, with several musical genres such as doo-wop, rhythm-and-blues, romantic ballads, Motown, country-western, cabaret, gospel, bubble-gum, and of course, classic rock n’ roll. A “coming-of-age tale” subtly emerges when friends in the neighborhood reminisce about various stages of their lives. Their memories evoke a feeling of togetherness. Each lyric is a self-contained story. There are classic themes of love longings, love won and love lost; having money and losing it; going to jail; calls for social change; finding one’s place in the world; and celebrating friendship. In Smokey Joe’s Café, a golden age of America comes to life and provides electrifying entertainment and compelling musical theatre. This rockin’ party of a show will entice the audience to sing along, tap their toes, and dance in the aisles.
